Mr. Chewy Product Review

With all the meal planning, budgeting, & bargain shopping that I do, one thing that always passes my thoughts is dog food. Since our dog Mia is an old elderly canine, we can’t just purchase just any brand of food for her. She is frail ( due to an accident she had prior to our parents adopting her) & cold weather really takes a toll on her bones. And since she doesn’t get much exercise, weight management is also a factor. Mr. Chewy.com is a great resource for someone who like who is always forgetting to pick up dog food and still needs to find it at a decent price.

Mr. Chewy offers over 70 varieties of different brands for your dog or cat. The site is very easy to use! They have pet food, treats, toys, even flea & tick control for your beloved pet. My favorite part of Mr. Chewy.com is they offer free shipping over $49!! That’s a huge savings considering that dry dog food is fairly heavy in weight.

I was easily able to find Mia’s dry dog food which suits her needs for senior health. I placed my order last Thursday around 3pm & received my shipping confirmation by dinnertime that very same day. Talk about super fast shipping! Since it was a weekend I received our order Monday afternoon via UPS.

As you can see in the picture above, I ordered 3 large- 22lb bags of Pedigree. Each package was shipped in it’s own box for a total of 3 boxes at my doorstep. The free Shipping really saved me a pretty penny!! I know with that much dog food I won’t have to worry about purchasing dog food anytime son, but since Mr. Chewy offers a subscription plan, I can gauge when we will run out and have it already ordered before I forget…again!

The Shelter Pet Project

Back in 2004, my parents & youngest sister (then a teen) went to the local shelter to adopt a new dog. Her name was Mia. Mia was gentle, mild mannered canine who’s favorite activities included, well…sleeping. Mia was adorable mature dog who had several health problems. In addition to being an older dog, she had been hit by a moving vehicle resulting in a limp to both her hind legs.

It was also believed that Mia’s former family had physically abusive toward her. I remember Mia when my family first adopted her, how nervous she was around people, especially young boys. My son & nephew were both born in 2004 and when they were old enough to walk, Mia was very apprehensive towards them. It wasn’t that they were rough with her, but they may have represented trouble she had with her previous family. It didn’t take her long to not only love the boys in our family but she is now attached to all the kids!

In 2009, my parents were not able to keep her due to the apartment they were moving in. There was no way we could say good bye to Mia & them moving to another location was not an option. So, I offered for Mia to live with my family. We had already loved her & that way my parents could still have her apart of their lives as well.

One evening my family & Mia were in the living room watching a movie. We were watching the newest movie blockbuster, so the television was fairly loud. Out of nowhere Mia starts barking. She raced to the front door continuously barking heavily. My husband & I were alarmed since we live in a rural area outside of town limits. My husband went outside and saw a tragic car accident that started on the road right outside our house & ended 2 houses away. He ran outside, met with other neighbors and instantly medics, firefighters, state police etc were on the scene. Unfortunately, the crash victims did not survive but had Mia not have barked heavily, we would have gone on with our movie & have never known what had happened or it may have been handled differently.

My children love Mia. Mia is very protective about the children in our family. She sleeps in my daughter’s room (weather I agree to it or not). Her favorite hobbies still include sleeping and the occasional squirrel chase in my backyard.

The Shelter Pet Project is a public service campaign from The Ad Council, The Humane Society and Maddie’s Fund, and is aimed at increasing the number of pets that get adopted from shelters and rescue groups versus buying them from a pet store or a breeder. With Christmas Holidays coming up, what a better way to give your family a much loved gift, than adopting a dog or cat from your local Humane Society, shelter, or Rescue Group.

Please make sure to research the idea of adopting. Shelter animals need lots of love, but remember, they may also require dog care for health issues. Mia requires a strict diet due to her age & also due to her bone health issues. Her diet is not a big cost difference, she just requires more vegetables and food that is best for senior care.

Mia has been such an amazing joy in not only my children’s life, but my parents & siblings as well. All my children’s friends come over and Mia is the first person to greet them. I couldn’t imagine our family not having Mia in our lives.

To find out more about adopting a much needed animal, you can go to the The Shelter Pet Project, Facebook Page, or on their Twitter page.

The Shelter Pet Project has some adorable video they have recently produced. Make sure to stop by their YouTube Page to see the clever & witty videos. They will definatly bring a smile to your face.

If you haven’t adopted a pet yet, please consider the idea. I know your family will have the same experience our family has had. If you have adopted in the past Thank You so much for sharing your love to a pet that needs you.
